Sweeping statementZ..

On Sundays, I read The Sunday Times...
On page 11 of The Sunday Times dated May 15, 2005, sub-head: news...
Is an article about Philips Yeo: Chairman of Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*Star)

His statement that incurred a lot of wrath from Singapore men is, as follows:
"I don't want whining Singapore boys. They are not mature even though they have national service and are over 22 years old when they take up undergraduate studies. They give me so much trouble and waste our precious time. It would be better off giving more scholarships to foreign students and Singapore girls."

The above statement was made a week ago and was published in The New Paper.
Now, that would be what we call a sweeping statement(s).

He said that he is fed up of Singapore men who break government scholarship bond and thus deems them as immature. But the statement he made seems to disregard everything...It seems that he felt (in his opinion) that all Singapore guys who have signed up for government scholarship bond are immature. Or perhaps, every Singapore guy after NS is still immature until deem mature by him...I feel that he is making a very irresponsible statement here...He is a Singapore men too, isn't he? Well, I suppose he also had taken government scholarship bond before...Now, so (based on his statements) he is an immature guy...Is he not?

Not every Singapore guys who had taken government scholarship bond breaks it right?
So, how can he say such a statement then?? Doesn't he feel that he isn't doing justice to those keeping to the agreement/contract?

Now then, he said that Singapore girls don't break the government scholarship bond, not at all...I'm not very sure if that is true but even if it is true...Has he ever considered why they hadn't while guys did? Is it really because girls are more mature in thinking as he claims, or was(were) there other reasons?(I'm not suggesting girls are not mature...)

Hasn't it mystify Mr Philips Yeo that why female scholarship holders didn't break the agreement while some men did?? Perhaps he really should investigate.

Ms Chng ZhenZhi, an A*Star scholarship holder said in the article when interviewed...
"The local boys are OK until they enter national service. Once they enter NS, they complain a lot. I didn't know that guys could talk about the most minute things. Perhaps they're not used to the physical training or regimentation."

Now, Ms Chng..If you would just think for a minute..
Why do Singapore guys complain during the NS periods more often than before they were in NS...Imagine being in a camp for almost 7 days in a week..Doing all forms of muscle-aching exercise and when it comes to rest(sleep)...the muscle 'screams' at every tiny movements...Being in NS may be fun but not as fun as perhaps it was seemed to be..We, Singapore guys, build up 'brotherhood' in NS...So, of course when we are occasionally let out of camps, we would complain a little to our dear families n friends about the hardships we suffered in camps...After all, its the only thing we ever did all day long...Hang on..Including life without TV, family members afar...A breath-taking landscape...Something to unwind to...Heck, of course NS become our main topic when we chat...What do you expect? Fantasy/Science Fiction stories? Can't we even have a little complain then? Sometimes, we just aren't as 'strong' as girls think we are...and since few girls have been through hardships of NS...perhaps you really should give us the benefit of the doubt (on NS) and just let us complain a little more...while you sit still and listen...Will ya? Yes? Thank You...Alot..

Coming back to the point..
Even if the male scholarship holder breaks his agreement..
Had he consider their explanations before "sweepingly" say: "you are immature!... "
Well, I guess not...The issue is not whether they are mature anot...but rather, why they want to break the agreement? Isn't it so? Only if you had found out why they break their agreements then could you do something to reduce the number of "bond breakers". Right?

So, I suggest, instead of sitting by that table in your office coming up with more sweeping statement(s)..Why not do something about it? Sweeping statements isn't going to improve the situation any better than real action!!

Going Postal

Book: Going Postal
Author: Terry Pratchett

ShortCuts: Arch-swindler Moist Van Lipwig never believed his confidence crimes were hanging offenses -- until he found himself with a noose tightly around his neck, dropping through a trapdoor, and falling into ... a government job?

By all rights, Moist should have met his maker. Instead, it's Lord Vetinari, supreme ruler of Ankh-Morpork, who promptly offers him a job as Postmaster. Since his only other option is a nonliving one, Moist accepts the position -- and the hulking golem watchdog who comes along with it, just in case Moist was considering abandoning his responsibilities prematurely.

Getting the moribund Postal Service up and running again, however, may be a near-impossible task, what with literally mountains of decades-old undelivered mail clogging every nook and cranny of the broken-down post office building; and with only a few creaky old postmen and one rather unstable, pin-obsessed youth available to deliver it. Worse still, Moist could swear the mail is talking to him. Worst of all, it means taking on the gargantuan, money-hungry Grand Trunk clacks communication monopoly and its bloodthirsty piratical head, Mr. Reacher Gilt.

But it says on the building neither rain nor snow nor glo m of ni t ... Inspiring words (admittedly, some of the bronze letters have been stolen), and for once in his wretched life Moist is going to fight. And if the bold and impossible are what's called for, he'll do it -- in order to move the mail, continue breathing, get the girl, and specially deliver that invaluable commodity that every human being (not to mention troll, dwarf, and, yes, even golem) requires: hope.

Review: This book may have a fantasy tag on it...But it is definitely an adventure/action genre than fantasy..true it may have a few magical characters..but the story hinges mainly on the main non-magical character, Mr Moist Van Lipwig, and his motivation that gets the post office going..It is indeed a very inspiring work that motivates people to write letters and once again puts the faith and hope in post office that thier letters will be delivered to the intended recipient no matter what..And how inspiring that it keeps the post office going and without a doubt..the story is littered with numerous jokes that tickles you to laugh..Wahaha..Just really enjoyed reading it..and more than ever..motivates me to write letters than e-mails..wahaha..Letters thru the post is worth alot more than e-mails..Or so it is in this book....One note though..It may turn you against using e-mails to communicate with your friends..Beware...

Snow White and the Seven Samurai

Book: Snow White and the Seven Samurai
Author: Tom Holt

ShortCuts: Once upon a time (or last Thursday, as it's known in this matrix) everything was fine: Humpty Dumpty sat on his wall, Jack and Jill went about their lawful business, the Big Bad Wolf did what big bad wolves do, and the wicked queen plotted murder most foul. But the humans hacked, cried havoc, shut down the wicked queen's system (mirrors 3.1) and corrupted her database - and suddenly everything was not fine at all. But at least we know that they'll all live happily ever after. Don't we? Computers and fairy tales collide to hilarious effect in the latest sparkling cocktail of mayhem, wit and wonder from the master of comic fantasy.

Review: This book is really funny with its words..Hmm..It's kinda messy if you did not know where you last stoped..becos the story jumps from here to there..as the events occur concurrently...kinda like confusing sometimes..but the story in the final revelation all ends well..as in the author manages to tie it all up very nicely..leaving no loose ends and questions..at least in my case..And i'm pretty glad everything turns out fine..a very fun storyline..Good n light-hearted (if not confusing sometimes) read..Will recommend it...

Millions

Oh well, yesterday i went watching movie -millions- with my friend, patrick.
The movie was simple..Two boys found a stash of money..
But within a week they need to spend it all away..because it is changing to euros soon..
and the money would be quite useless then..
The elder brother, anthony, wants to spend it all between his brother on material stuff..
While his younger brother, damien, wants to use part of this money to do the works of saints..
meaning, to help the poor..like donating money to needed charities..becos he believed that the money came from god, bestoed to him to do good deeds...
While the two brothers are always conflicting on the issue of money..They were really concerned about each other..to cut to the chase, the robber was caught, the money were converted to euros, with about 3/4 of it returned to the police..the remaining 1/4 was kept by them secretly..
overall movie rating: 3.5 stars out of 5.

Well, i wouldn't say it is really a v. nice movie..but it does somehow lack something which i can't point out as yet..nevertheless, it is still a good movie.

Chated with my friend for some time cos we heaven met up for about a yr since he went NS...
He told me lots of stuff..He said that the NS weren't as strict as in the past..But still, dun try to do foolish thing there..It seems that the camera phones are allowed in some camps now..But discreet is observed when bringing such stuff..Like cameras too..He urged me to learn driving now while i can, than to wait till NS..But seriously speaking, i know i can't afford a car..It's akin to a second wife..meaning spending money (lotsa) on the car..like repairing it, spray painting it, COE, oil prices...It'll just all add up to a huge cost that i think is not worth the effort..Nevertheless, it is a skill that is rather good to have when u got a free car, COE, oil refilling, car repairs..But i doubt there will be that day where u drive the car but someone else pays for the expenses of the car..Haha..It's just not likely..But for most of my friends whom had car driving licence..not able to drive a car is a great discomfort..

Pausing for a moment to think, actually, i hadn't much courage to try i guess..
Somehow i just can't get over the overcast of failure..All boils down to my low self esteem..
I know i got to do something..but i dun think i can do it..
I always imagine failure before i started to doing things..
And well, yes most of the times, IT'S A FAILURE...
Perhaps i need to think just a bit more positively..
Then everything would work out well..

A tribute to Mums..Esp MinE..hee..

Tomorrow will be one of the celebrated days of the year..
"Mothers' DaY"..

So as we moved on from today to tomorrow..
We should pause for a moment and recalled how our mums..
Her undying love, care, concern and self sacrificing nature endear us to her so much..
sometimes to the extend that we 'love' our mums greater than dads..

Well, i heard some talks over the radio today..
It was filled with the sms messages of their well wishes for their mums..
Some were simple and sweet, while others were sad..
But all in all, they were meant for their mums..
And only their mums know more about its meaning..

Well, paying tribute to my dear mummy here..
Though i think she might not know about this entry..
haha..it's ok, i've ways to entice her..

Thanks mummy for the undying support you gave me when i failed miserably..
Thanks for forgiving me the times i was naughty and made you angry..
Thanks for all the naggings that were all in all a good sport of encouragement..
Thanks for your undying love of me even when i sometimes really make you wish you hadn't born a brat like me..(I know i was naughty during my childhood times..)
Thanks for the times when i was lonely and you stayed up till i go to bed..
And thanks for having me..For the nine months of pain to give birth to a brat who only knows how to anger you, make your heart boiled and most of all, unstoppable worry for my well-being..
For i know you are the greatest mum i could ever have..Thanks Mummy..

Though i seldom speak of it..
Or even seldom show it thru my actions and expressions..
I really love you, mummy..
From the bottom of my heart..
I wanna wish you A HappY Mothers' DaY!!
Wish you as radiant, sunny and youthful as you are years ago..

*PS: Hope you enjoy the lunch i prepared for you today..
It was just a simple fare, but i really put in a lot of effort to do it k..
Wasn't too bad tasting rite?? At least i think it's alright..
If i can comment..It's too delicious =P

MonumenT

I have just finished a "FanTasY" book...

Book : Monument
Author : Ian Graham
Book Cover : http://213.253.134.29/jackets/m/184/1841491969.jpg

ShortCut : A big man named Ballas, is a drunk and vagrant. He was beaten up by a mob of people whom he has stolen their money pouches. A young priest saves him, but he steals from the priest, for he is one who does not know how to return kindness. Of all the things he had stolen, one is an artifact, an item called MONUMENT. This artifact is the key of the story. This artifact causes Ballas to be constantly on the hunt. The mystery of what this artifact really is and its ability is revealed in the final chapter of the book.

Review : The story does not seem like a fantasy. Moreover, it seems like a long and arduous journey, if it wasn't already unnecessary. The book is littered with swearing and profanities in every possible and impossible way imagined. Feelings for the characters were not evoked upon the reader. However, it has a vivid description of scenery and images of the characters. Perhaps this is the only credit of the story. The journey is really too long and uninteresting. It might have been a more enjoyable read if the journey is simplified to a few pages and continue with the revelation. If you intend to read this book...Then you can take note of the following chapters: 1-5, 18-21...For these are the chapters I feel are a bit more interesting and important.

RaTiNg : 1 out of 5 stars

PS:
To the author: I don't really meant that all your works are bad, but i really dislike this work here. Hope you can take my comments like a pinch of salt and keep working on novels. One failure doesn't mean much. Keep trying k...May you have a fruitful time writing novels.
